    STRONG FINISH TO SEASON

Izacat was a bit unlucky to finish second yesterday at Canterbury. He copped interference in the straight when he was starting to hit top gear. He was our last runner for the 2007/08 season.

Flying Topaze also was obstructed in the straight and was beaten by the narrowest of margins at Wyong. He looks to have a bright future.

Our other two year old runner Shine On Anna stormed home to run third after being slowly away in a strong race at Sandown.

The signs for the new season are good.

    HORSE OF THE YEAR AWARDS

Greenmount Belle and Huiskes are well in the running to win the three year old and two year old horse of the year awards in Tasmania.

Both fillies have performed with distinction during the season and Charlie Goggin deserves a lot of credit for the outstanding job he has done with them.

    HUISKES RETURNS

The Elwick Stakes winner Huiskes makes her return to racing on Sunday at Elwick. The filly gave her owners a lot of joy with her best win being in the Listed Elwick Stakes. On Sunday she will be ridden by Tasmania's leading rider, Brendan McCoull. The filly is on trial for a trip to Melbourne where she will try to add to her already impressive record.

McCoull will also partner the old war horse Under Command. Charlie Goggin has been working the horse on the Seven Mile Beach near Hobart and this seems to be working.

ANOTHER STAKES WIN FOR ROCK OF GIBRALTAR

Rock Of Gibraltar's golden run continued in the UK over the weekend when his son Yellowstone won the Silver Cup at York for 3YOs & up. Yellowstone looks to have a bright future.

Yelowstone's win was Rock Of Gibraltar's fourth stakes win in the past week.

    ANOTHER DOUBLE

Greenmount Belle and Miss Naiomi scored impressive wins in Hobart today.

Miss Naiomi became our third individual two year old winner in Tasmania this season when she was smply too good for the opposition. Charlie Goggin has almost 100% record for us with horses that were purchased to be syndicated in the Apple Isle.

In the past two years I have syndicated 7 yearlings in Tasmania which are either two or three year olds. All seven have raced with six winning. The seventh had to be put down after a paddock accident which was a shame because he ran a terrific 4th on debut in the Alexandra Plate which was his only race start.

Greenmount Belle has earned herself a crack in Melbourne after scoring her 5th win for the season. Today she best the Open company sprinters which isn't an easy task for a three year old.

    DOUBLE IN NEWCASTLE

Miss Bulawayo and Tuqiri scored good wins at Newcastle yesterday. Miss Bulawayo has always displayed good ability but has taken time to come to the party. She looked strong at the end of the race and should give her owners more thrills in the coming weeks.

Tuqiri has started to repay his owners patience by putting back to back wins together. I was amazed at his price but it was welcome. Starting at almost 40/1 on the tote he charged home from the rear of the big field to just get there. He is ready to head to the city.

Kris Lees strike rate for us is terrific. since Magnifique Lass's win on 25 March Kris has started 17 runners for 7 winners or a strike rate of about 41%.

ANOTHER STAKES WINNER FOR ROCK OF GIBRALTAR

Rock Of Gibraltar continued his amazing run with Genuine Devotion scored in a Group 3 race at Churchill Downs. The 'Rock's statistics are amazing and he does look like being Danehill's best son at stud given the results his progeny are producing.

Is he going to be as successful as his sire, the incredible Danehill. Only time will tell but given his overall results and that his oldest here are only three he must be a good hope. After all he was Danehill's best son on the track.

ROCK OF GIBRALTAR IS A STAR

Rock Of Gibraltar posted his 8th Australian stakes winner in Australia this season when three year old filly Rock My Pago won the Belmont Stakes in Perth. This was followed by Mount Nelson winning the Group 1 Coral Eclipse Stakes in the UK.

Rock Of Gibraltar's latest stakes winner in Australia sees him leading the second season sires list for the most stakes winners with 8. To put this into perspective he is equal with Redoute's Choice and Commands which both have 8 stakes wins each. This is a terrific effort considering his oldest progeny are only three and Redoute's Choice and Commands are represented with three more crops racing. The leading Australian stallion with stakes wins is Encosta De Lago with 12 just 4 more than 'The Rock'.

The most important aspect of his progeny's performance's is their ability to win over a middle distance trip.

Have a close look at the Rock Of Gibraltar filly we are offering. She has Oaks prospect written all over her.

SHINE ON ANNA IN NICE RETURN TO THE TRACK

Shine On Anna ran a very nice second on resuming at Bendigo on Fridayand looks a very promising filly. I purchased the filly from Edinglassie Stud for $75,000 at the 2007 Gold Coast Magic Millions Sale. The Encosta De Lago and Rock Of Gibralter fillies I am offering also came from Edinglassie which is one of our best studs.

    GREG EURELL JOINS PRIME THOROUGHBREDS

Greg Eurell has joined the Prime Thoroughbreds team of trainers. Greg is an excellent horseman and trains out of a rural setting near Cranbourne. He has done an excellent job in recent years and is the trainer of the outstanding horse Apache Cat.

I will be sending Greg a well related Al Maher colt. His details will be on the site later today.

Greg is solely based in Victoria and gives those clients that wish to have a horse trained in the state a very viable option.

    IZACAT

Izacat gave nothing else a chance and looked good winning at Wyong this afternoon. Aided by a terriffic ride by Hugh Bowman he had his opposition covered a long way from home and charged away in the straight to record an impressive win.

Congratulations to his owners who look as though they will be rewarded for their patience.

    BAVARIAN BELLE LOOKS THE GOODS

Bavarian Belle gave her opposition a galloping lesson on Sunday when she scored a 4.5 length win at Elwick. The filly was very well ridden by Brendan McCoull and is now heading to the paddock before being prepared for an ambitious summer programme.

She is by the first season sire Clangalang out of the Dehere mare Rich Dessert.

Congratulations to her owners. I'm certain they will have a lot of fun with this filly. In winning Bavarian Belle ran the fastest last 600m of the day.

    TUQIRI SCORES GUTSY WIN

Tuqiri scored a gutsy win at Cessnock this afternoon. He got back on the tight circuit and was too good for his rivals in the run home.

After a quiet couple of weeks we have plenty happening over the next week. Things kick off on Friday at Bendigo where we have Hidden Wonder resuming in the transferred VRC meeting.

On the same day Tuqiri runs at Cessnock and at last has a decent gate.

In Hobart on Sunday Under Command has his first start for Charlie Goggin in a 1200 m race. The race is essentially a barrier trial and the horse is on trial for a winter campaign in Melbourne. At the same meeting Greenmount Belle and Bavarian Belle are running.

    ANOTHER TWO YEAR OLD WINNER

We had our 4th winner since Saturday when Mr Langer became our 3rd individual two year old winner this season. He is a very promising horse and gives every impression he will get a middle distance when he gets older.

Mr Langer gave his owners a great thrill when he fought back strongly after being headed in the straight to score a close but decisive win.

I purchased Mr Langer as a yearling after a visit to Lindsay Park in South Australia. I was inspecting a group of yearlings in a paddock at the farm when I spotted a striking chestnut colt. I asked to have a look at his pedigree and was amazed that he was closely related to our very good sprinter Holding.

2006 GOLD COAST MAGIC MILLIONS GRADUATES

I was checking where our current crop of three year olds were bought. In all I bought ten of the seventeen from yearling sales conducted by Magic Millions at the Gold Coast. To date all ten got to the races with seven of these horses having won races.

These horses include some very handy horses. Lord Monty, Brunei Tale, Hidden Wonder, Greenmount Belle and Magnifique Lass have raced and been competitive in black type races.

The other two winners are Expressmoss and Izacat. Canhedance is metropolitan placed and the other two simply couldn't pass the ball and have been moved on.

Already we have two winners and two placed horses out of the yearlings we bought from Gold Coast Magic Millions sales last year. In the next few weeks I expect quite a few more to get to the races.

I only have shares remaining in the Mossman colt and filly and Al Maher filly that I bought at this year's Gold Coast Magic Millions main sale.

    PRIME ON FIRE

What a weekend!!!!! Four runners for three winners and an unlucky 5th in a Group 3 race.

The Belles were on fire in Hobart with Bavarian Belle setting things up with a 3 1/2 length win in the Two Year Old maiden. I think this was Clangalang's first winner and what a win!!!!!

Greenmount Belle was as impressive as you could imagine winning by 7 1/2 lengths. Both the fillies were beautifully bred.

Yesterday at the Gold Coast Let There Be Rock smashed his opposition. He will now head to a 1200 m 3year old race at Eagle Farm on Stradbroke day.

Probably the biggest news was Magnifique Lass's great run in the Group 3 Doomben Roses. She will now run in the Queensland Oaks at Eagle Farm.

    CHOISIR DOING AMAZINGLY GOOD JOB

Choisir has really established himself as more than just a promising sire during the past few weeks. At Canterbury on Tuesday he had his 37th individual winner for the current season to be the leading 2nd season sire for the number of winners. Falvelon is in second place with 29 winners and Hussonet and Rock Of Gibraltar share third with 28 winners.

The strength of Choisir's overall performance is further enhanced when you look at the stakes money his progeny have earned. He is 2nd in that category to Hussonet who is also having a fabulous season mainly due to the exploits of the freakish Weekend Hussler which has earned over half Hussonet's stakes money for the season.

Choisir also has the same number of stakes horses as Rock Of Gibraltar with 7 although Rock Of Gibraltar with 7 stakes winners from his 28 winners is mirroring the exceptional job he is doing around the world.

Since the introduction of the shuttle stallions the Australian racing public have been very impressed with just how well the local lads have fared against there higher profile overseas visitors and Choisir is more than holding his own here and starting to build quite a reputation in Europe.

    RUNNERS IN FOUR STATES
The next 10 days sees us having runners in four states. This Saturday all eyes will be on Queensland where Magnifique Lass and Let There Be Rock will race at Doomben and the Gold Coast respectively.

This is a big day for Magnifique Lass. She lines up in the Group 3 Doomben Roses over 2020 metres for three year old fillies. Magnifique Lass has been in sparkling form. Her last win was very strong and she gives the impression this trip will suit. As a full sister to Fritz's Princess she will be a very valuable breeding proposition should she get black type.

On Sunday at Elwick Greenmount Belle and Bavarian Belle return to racing. Both are on trial for campaigns in Melbourne.

On Monday Canhedance heads to Wangaratta and Mr Langer is scheduled to race at Sale on Thursday.

It is Scone Cup day on Friday and Under Command will hopefully line up in the Cup with Tuqiri set to race on the same day.

We have quite a few two year olds getting close to trialling and we should see some of them at the races in the coming weeks.

BREEDNET STORY ON ROCK OF GIBRALTAR

Breednet is one of the best racing site in Australia and focuses on the Breeding side of the industry. Here is a story on Rock Of Gibraltar's incredible conversion rate of stakes horses to named foals.

14% Stakes Horses to Named Foals

    Tara Madgwick - Wednesday, May 07, 2008

When we talk about the elite stallions there are few that can produce a statistic of 14% stakes horses to named foals, but after a weekend in which he added three new stakes-winners to his tally, Coolmore’s Rock of Gibraltar (IRE) now falls into that category.

Rated the finest horse in the world in 2002 after retiring with seven Group One victories to his credit, Rock of Gibraltar (IRE) is by far the best performed son of champion sire Danehill to go to stud anywhere in the world.

As such he has received plenty if opportunity in terms of broodmare numbers and quality, but results would indicate he’s more than worthy of the privilege.

On the weekend Rock of Gibraltar (IRE) (pictured below) added three new stakes-winners in three countries with Rockwood winning the Group Three AJC Frank Packer Plate at Randwick, Kandahar Run taking the Listed Newmarket Stakes in Great Britain and Japanese based Irish bred four year-old Fast Rock winning the Fuchu Stakes.

He also had Group One place-getters in Seventh Rock (South Africa) and Murtajill (Australia).

Their efforts bring his overall stakes-winners to 33 plus an additional 17 stakes-placed horses, so in total he has 50 stakes horses from 356 named foals to give him 14% stakes horses to named foals.

    Lets compare this figure with some of our leading sires Redoute’s Choice 15.6 %, (74 stakes horses/ 474 named foals), More Than Ready (USA) (14.2 % 78/547), Encosta de Lago (11.4% 99/865), Flying Spur (11.3 % 107 / 947).

Footnote: Figures sourced from Stallions - Hussonet (USA) is another obvious choice to also include on this list, but I have little confidence in the accuracy of named foals data from his early years in Chile, however rest assured he’d have stats that place him right there with the best.

    YEARLINGS WELL RECEIVED

The yearlings I purchased have been well received by the market and I expect that most syndicates will be fully subscribed by the end of May.

Overall I found the market to be easier than in 2007 and I am very pleased with our purchases.

We have a good spread of horses with our trainers which gives our clients options.

I still firmly believe that there is terrific value in the market and that we can buy very good horses in the $30,000 to $80,000 bracket.

Good examples of this are the three horses that we have had black type success with this year. Lord Monty cost $30,000, Hidden Wonder $55,000 and Huiskes $47,500. Each of these horses are now worth many times their purchase price.

    MAHA CHAKRI BRINGS $130,000

Maha Chakri fetched $130,000 at this afternoon's session of the Inglis Broodmare Sale. A $40,000 purchase through the same ring in 2005 she did a great job winning about $180,000 on the track and shold make it as a broodmare. She was a tough competitor and was well liked by her owners.

    CANHEDANCE UNLUCKY NOT TO WIN

Canhedance ran a terrific race this afternoon when he ran a close third at Ararat. He had no luck in the run and with normal running would have won. He has been a difficult horse and we transferred him to Andrew Payne who has a good reputation dealing with wayward horses.

Andrew deserves a lot of credit for the good job he has done with this horse.

    MAGNIFIQUE LASS IN STRONG WIN

Magnifique Lass continued her recent good form with a very impressive win at Gosford this afternoon. She was up in grade and took on the older horses and never looked like getting beaten.

She is on target to head to Queensland for the Queensland Oaks and given her rapid improvement a start in that race is on the cards.

Magnifique Lass is very well related being a full sister to the Group 1 placed Fritz's Princess. There is every chance that the sisters will run at Doomben on 17 May 08.

    BIG DAY FOR KRIS LEES

Kris Lees had a terrific day yesterday with four winners. The highlight was Samantha Miss's win in the Group 1 Champagne Stakes where she beat boom two year old Sebring. Kris is having a very good season and has 51 winners to his credit which places him in 4th place in NSW. There is every chance he will finish in second place behind Gai Waterhouse by the end of the season.

This is a great effort and compared to John O'Shea 28, Gerald Ryan 34 and Chris Waller 23 he is doing a super job.

    CHOISIR RUN CONTINUES

Choisir's good run continued today when his daughter Miss Independent won the $350,000 Inglis Classic at Randwick. He has had a terrific run with his daughters recently in Australia with top class performances from Hurried Choice, Silent But Deadly, Anatomica and Occurrence.

Let There Be Rock and Tuqiri put in terrific first up runs today at Ipswich and Newcastle. Both horses didn't get a lot of luck in the run but hit the line hard.

HALF BROTHER TO MAGGIE BEE AND JACKMELAD TO CHARLIE GOGGIN

Charlie Goggin was very excited when I called him to say that I had purchased him the half brother to his very good racemare Maggie Bee and the exciting sprinter Jackmelad.

Maggie Bee won seven races including two in Melbourne. He best perfomance was a gallant 4th in the Group 3 MRC Cockram Stakes at Caulfield. She won as a two year old.

Jackmelad has also won seven races and been placed nine times from only 18 starts. From 14/12/07 to 15 /03/08 he started five times for five wins.

The third foal to race out of the mare is a filly named Gleaming which is trained by Kris Lees. Kris has a very good opinion of the filly which was beaten out of a place at her only start after being a heavily backed favourite and suffered severe interference in the run and lost her rider.

    CLASSIC DRAWS TO A CLOSE

The Inglis Classic Sale draws to a close today at Newmarket in Sydney. It's closure will bring to an end the most intense period of yearling sales that I can remember. Since the end of February I have attended sales in Launceston, Adelaide, the Gold Coast, the Inglis Easter Sale and now the Inglis Classic.

Traditionally I have been very active at both the Magic Millions Gold Coast and Inglis Classic Sales. This year I bought 5 yearlings at the Gold Coast, 2 yearlings at the Inglis Easter Sale and so far I have purchased a Danasinga colt out of the very well credentialled mare Karadeniz. This colt will be heading to Charlie Goggin in Tasmania.

    TEAM ALMOST COMPLETE

As I attend the sales I feel like a talent scout for a football team trying to put together as good a side as I can within my budget.

I'm pleased to say that I have all but completed my purchases for 2008.

In all we have 16 yearlings on our books which is about the number I planned on buying this year.

I attended ths sale with the intention of purchasing a filly for David Hayes. I found six that I liked and that I thought would come in at my budget. I must say after the first day I wasn't confident of being able to buy any of them.

When Lot 132 came into the ring I thought I was little hope of securing her. She is by the highly successful stallion Rok Of Gibraltar out of the very good race mare Grandly which was placed 4th in the VRC Oaks.

I will be offering her as a 10 share partnership @ $12,500 per share.

When I did my study into the cross of Danehill or his sons over Grand Lodge mares I came up with some exciting matings. Included are the very good gallopers Marchings and Zipping.

As for Rock Of Gibraltar he just goes from strength to strength with 30 individual stakes winners from 129 winners. His most recent stakes winner was at Rosehill where Book Of Kells won on Saturday.

BIG PEDIGREE UPDATE - DANZERO FILLY OUT OF PURA SEDA

When Lot 160 came into the ring yesterday I was expecting a big number to be posted but not the $1.7 million that the colt out of How Funny fetched.

How Funny is a half sister to Pura Seda which is the dam of the Danzero filly we are offering. These were the first foals for both How Funny and Pura Seda.

It certainly makes our filly look great value and importantly it makes this family look very attractive with both How Funny and Pura Seda being very well mated.

    MORE THAN READY ON FIRE

More Than Ready's (USA) progeny's results over the past month have seen him charge up the sire's money lists.

Quite often a stallion will be high up on the list courtesy of one horse's performances. In the case of More Than Ready he has several very god performers representing him. During the past month we have seen his progeny win the Golden Slipper, Gold Coast Magic Millions Two Year Old Classic, Adelaide Magic Millions Two Year Old Classic, Epona Stakes and a third placing in the Coolmore Classic.

I expect that the More Than Ready colt that I am offering for sale will be very popular in the next week. Don't sit on the fence for too long.

VINERY STUD BIG WINNER IN GOLDEN SLIPPER

Vinery Stud in the Hunter Valley will be represented by four runers in this year's Golden Slipper. This is a marvellous effort and represents 25% of the field.

In many ways Vinery are the quiet achievers in the Hunter. Their representatives are the prepost favourite Sebring, highly fancied filly Augusta Proud, well regarded colt All American and the Peter Snowden trained Portillo.

Sebring and Augusta Proud are by the very good stallion in More Than Ready (USA) while All American and Portillo are by Red Ransom (USA).

More Than Ready is currently the leading two year old sire in Australia this season while the veteran Red Ransom has done a great job both here and overseas for many years.

The Hunter Valley is strongly represented with 14 of the 16 runners being by stallions that are based at studs in the Valley. The two exceptions are Hips Don't Lie by the NZ based Stravinsky and She's Meaner by Falvelon from the Sunshine State.

MORE THAN READY, CHOISIR AND DANZERO ON THE MOVE UPWARDS

More Than Ready has moved into 7th position on the General Sires List for Sires currently standing in Australia. This is a very good effort with him having far less runners than the horses ahead of him except for Hussonet.

More Than Ready has done a terrific job in Australia. His oldest progeny are only five and he only averaged 70 foals in his first three crops. Compare this with Encosta De Lago (1st) and General Nediym (13th) that averaged 165 and 130 live foals in the same years.

More Than Ready is currently Australia's Leading Two Year Old Sire and may have two runners in the Golden Slipper in Sebring and the flying filly Augusta Proud. This is an impressive effort considering he has only had 12 individual two year old runners this season.

Choisir's progeny have really started to hit their straps during the past few weeks. He is represented by Anatomica which will run in the Golden Slipper, the very good three year old filly Occurrence, Group winning filly Hurried Choice and had another metropolitan winner in Sydney when the Kris Lees trained stakes placed two year old Silent But Deadly won on Wednesday.

Danzero is currently placed 11th on the General Sires list for horses currently standing in Australia. He had another two year old winner when Hello Danz won the JJ Atkins Two year old in Toowoomba. This was his fourth individual two year old winner for the season from only eight to run.

Each of these stallions stands in ther Hunter Valley.

He will remain in Queensland and probably have one more start before heading south to prepare for the winter.

    MAGIC MILLIONS YEARLING ALLOCATIONS

I have allocated the yearlings I purchased at the Gold Coast Magic Millions Sale as follows:

Lot 157 Al Maher Filly out of Play Along (NZ) - David Hayes
This is a lovely staying filly out of a daughter of Australia's leading brood mare sire this season, Defensive Play.

    MAGNIFIQUE LASS SCORES GOOD WIN

Magnifique Lass completely dominated her opposition today to score an impressive win at Scone in a 1600 metres maiden.

This filly is a full sister to Fritz's Princess which was placed in the Group 1 Galaxy on Saturday at Randwick.

It was difficult to find a suitable maiden for the filly and we were forced to go to Scone where she proved far too strong.

Congratulations to Laine Moloney who replaced Alan Robinson and rode the filly superbly.
